Riverhouse

Riverhouse is a lovely country cottage available for self-catering holidays. It can be found on a tidal reach of the River Fal in the village of St. Clement less than two miles from the city of Truro, deep in the heart of Cornwall.

The house has an attractive slate roof, exposed beams, low ceilings and is at least 200 years old. It is situated directly on the riverfront and in its original form consisted of four terraced cottages. Over fifty years ago however it was converted into two separate three bedroom houses one of which is occupied by the owner and the other being available for holiday letting.

The holiday house is fully furnished and can sleep up to six people. The principal bedroom, with an ensuite bathroom, has a double bed and the remaining bedrooms have wide divans. These rooms and the second bathroom lead on to a minstrel gallery which looks down onto the open plan dining area.

There is a large light living room with glorious views and an open fireplace should the need arise. The kitchen is fully equipped with modern  electrical appliances including a microwave oven and dishwasher and there is a laundry with a washing machine and tumble dryer.

Riverhouse is set in over an acre of sloping, landscaped grounds which being south facing catches the sun almost all day. There is a raised secluded garden in front of the house amidst the trees and flowers, a perfect place for sunbathing or barbeques.

The view from the garden and indeed from almost every room in the house is across the ever-changing river to the unspoilt oak forest on the southern bank. With no other man-made structure in sight, your peace is assured and in case you should want to become part of the view yourself a rowing boat is available for your use.

Riverhouse is only available during the summer and early autumn period
when weekly tariff ranges from £300.00 to £550.00.

Beyond Riverhouse

By the church of light and steeple glass
I look about the brow of the garden's face.
Stand on the back of a wheelless barrow
an overgrown upturned carapace.
I see a ladder yearning missing rungs
beside a gutted tank of rust cut flake.
Whilst rows of leavings decrying mourners
wait in beds with hospital corners.
I trace a prefect hedge to tangle weed
past vineyard limbs on twists of wire.
Along a plastic flaunt of hose pipe ban
to berries picked off by friendly fire.
She calls out within waves fingers stained
her eyes are warm and faint amused.
'One for the basket and one for me'
from stolen kisses her lips are bruised.
A camouflage lawn falls away to the house
under washing strung between tree stump ivy.
Lime sheet veils of pegged precision
flirt with a wind of indecision.
Red brick rouge on powder white
small panes ghost and rain pipe scars.
Downcast stairs lament Grandma's loss
below drawn eaves and frowns of moss.
Roof top slate of lichen grey
clings in angled time defenses.
On trembling spine rude chimneys totter
frame a postcard gaze with terracotta.
A river scythe sweeps from a mud flat hilt
beneath banks of clouds of cumulus green.
Joining hill curves and patchwork quilt
to touch skies of blue and white serene

(a poem by Richard Baker who has spent many happy, relaxing hours reclining on the lawns of  Riverhouse)
